CINE & VIDEO Mujeres de PastapurWomen of Pastapur
Bolivia: Union Rights
This is one of six documentaries on various aspects of human rights that were directed by different filmmakers in Chile, Uganda, South Africa, India, Peru and Bolivia, as part of the Dutch television series "People Matter". The film concentrates on the struggle of miner's unions to keep their organizations strong and influential in the Bolivian political context.
The Voice of the Mines
Acknowledging the importance of Bolivian miner's community radio stations, which developed since the fifties, UNESCO produced this documentary, co-directed by Eduardo Barrios. The film gives an overview of how communication helped to better organize the workers and made their voice be heard loud and clear even during the most difficult political circumstances.
Senores Generales, Senores Coroneles
During seven years, from 1971 to 1878, the military ruled Bolivia under the presidency of Hugo Bánzer Suarez. This documentary, done during the dictatorship, denounces the violations of human rights, the mismanagement of the economy and the huge corruption that characterized the regime.
Primo Castrillo: Poeta
The film captures the very last days of Bolivian poet and architect Primo Castrillo. Born in a poor Indian family, he spoke Aymara before he learned Spanish. Primo was obsessed with improving his education and he was so good at it that was often awarded scholarships. After becoming an architect in the USA, he fought for the opportunity to work with well known architects such as Mies van der Rohe or Philip Johnson. Only when he retired he started writing poetry, and until the moment of his death in 1984 he had published more than twenty books.
Oloruntoba
Nigerian painter "Chief" Sunday Oloruntoba is one of those characters that cannot go unnoticed. He emerges always elegantly wrapped in a luxurious silk ashoke, glowing of brilliant colours, like his paintings. His work is full of harmony and light: he combines bright blues, greens, violets, oranges, and reds in surprising ways. He is a wonderful colourist and designer, his work on rice paper or on cloth is a magnificent collection inspired in Nigerian traditions and religious cults. He himself is a priest of the Yoruba religion. During a sequence of this video documentary, he wears a vest fully decorated with seashells: "No bullet can get through this" he says triumphant. His paintings are like talismans, the titles are significant of the Yoruba influence: "Three special birds for luck", "Giant elephant to obtain money", "Protection for the house", and so on.
